A Month With The Macbook Pro 14 Inch: The Perspective of a Video Editor
I’ve spent about a month with the 14 inch Macbook M1 Pro model. I decided on the base model to keep things simple and suit my budget, but I was slightly nervous going into this transition from windows to mac once again. Here are a few of my thoughts after a month of adding this tool to my toolbox.
As a video editor I’m still blown away by the speed I’m able to achieve. Moving around my timeline with full 4K resolution color graded footage, custom animations, titles, transitions, audio effects, and full res B-Roll is seamless. One of my gripes with my previous mobile editing setup was the lack of efficiency in my workflow. I was able to edit my A-Roll, add the initial color correction, and maybe I’d be able to add in a few titles. I would have to transfer my project to my desktop to complete the edit, and with the amount of hats I wear finding the time to sit down at home to edit basically a full project was sometimes difficult and resulted in lost sleep. Since switching to the Macbook M1 Pro I have edited every client and personal project start to finish with 0 need to move any files over to my desktop. Not that it would matter, since I’m not using Final Cut Pro X (Article coming on that very soon).
Let me also say the build quality on this machine is incredible. The body has great weight to it, I love the built in SD card reader, and the keyboard is one of the best I’ve ever used in my life. The only complaint I have is the lack of a USB-A port, but I can live with that. As far as the screen goes; I’ve never had a more color accurate display right out of the box. In the past I’ve had to color calibrate every monitor I’ve ever ordered, but with this device my calibration tool had no work to do whatsoever. Very Impressed
Overall for professionals in the writing, video editing, photography, or design space I can confidently say I am very pleased to be building a new workstation centered around this compact device. Plus, the tax write-off is always nice.
